adult books

  • Carl Hiaasen: Hoot

    Carl Hiaasen: Hoot

The kids read it, then listened to the audiobook, then I read it to get the rest of what I did not hear while listening to the audio, plus to use its hijinks to flush out the jangly affecting-ness of A Homemade Life. I love Carl Hiassen, and while I can rarely recall the title of my favorite of his books (Double Whammy aka, "The Fish Book"), I was really interested to read his work for young readers.

I cannot decide whether to be alarmed or content that a character description consisting of the stepmother being a. chain-smoking, and b. having met the dad while she was waitressing from a golf cart in a bikini, was something perfectly-nuanced and windowpane-clear for my children.

  • Erin McKenna: BabyCakes: Vegan, (Mostly) Gluten-Free, and (Mostly) Sugar-Free Recipes from New York's Most Talked-About Bakery

I liked this book. It is a relic of a time before I crashed my bicycle and became uninterested in extra and new kinds of work but I did love the way that she runs this highly-regarded NYC cupcake patisserie and her gluten-free goods contain not a whit of mad-scientology. She uses Bob's Red Mill GF PreMix. Brilliant!
